Independence

We do not take money to recommend a contractor, a mix, or a sealer. Product names appear when they help a reader understand a class of material, not because a brand paid for the sentence. If a relationship could look like influence, we name it. The footer link to Worldwide Backlinks is marked rel="sponsored", as is any paid or guest-post link.

Sources

Practical essays still need a spine. We lean on public Australian documents — the National Construction Code, AS 2870 for residential slabs and footings, AS 3600 for concrete structures, and the published rules of Newcastle City Council, Lake Macquarie City Council and neighbouring Hunter councils — and on the lived practice of the yard. When we give a cost range it is a journalistic estimate in Australian dollars, not a quote. When a number is uncertain we say so.

What this is not

Nothing here is engineering design, legal advice or a substitute for a licensed builder, certifier or geotechnical engineer. A house on a problem site in the Hunter can be a different job from the house next door. Read the essay, then hire the person who will stamp the drawing.

Corrections

Factual errors are corrected on the page and, where the error has travelled, noted as a correction. Send evidence to the contact desk. We would rather be accurate than first.

Images

Photographs are Creative Commons or public domain, downloaded and hosted on this site, and credited beside the picture and on the credits page. We do not scrape contractor galleries.

Voice

We write in Australian English, in complete sentences, for readers who already know a kerb from a crossover. Jargon is allowed if it is explained. Fear is not a business model.
